Gracie graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1936. Her family then moved to Portland, Oregon, prior to WWII. During the war, Gracie worked beside her father as a pipe fitter in the Portland shipyards. Following the war she found employment with the Meier & Frank Company in downtown Portland where she worked for more than 38 years before she retired from Data Processing in 1984.
Gracie married Estol V. "Vern" Walters in July, 1947. They were married for 44 years until he preceded her in death in December, 1991.
Grace & Vern were avid "weekend golfers" in their active years, and loved to travel. They traveled by RV around the Western United States, and made trips to Hawaii and Europe. They made several trips together to Australia, and Gracie returned there for a few months after Vern's death.
Following retirement, Gracie filled her time by volunteering with the Portland Camp Fire Council offices, OASIS, and at the Trinity Sunshine School. She remained active in her church folding bulletins and greeting on Sunday mornings.
Gracie loved throwing parties -- her New Year's Eve bashes were well attended. Gracie was well-known for her wonderful whistling and yodeling capabilities. In her later years it was sometimes difficult to convince her to do either -- unless you had the smiling face of a young child.
Grace is survived by three nieces: Nancy Rae Smith of Portland OR; Ruth M. Carpenter of Lewiston ID; Donna F. Strickler of Clarkson WA; and their families -- including 13 great nieces and nephews.
A Celebraton of Life will take place at Trinity Fellowship Church, 2700 SE 67th Ave., Portland Oregon, on Wednesday September 15th, at 11:00 AM.
Arrangements under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Portland, OR. (503) 292-6611.
