Born on August 4, 1952, in Portland, Ore., to Robert and Anne Jones, Greg spent his early years in the Maplewood neighborhood in SW Portland, a community that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He attended Maplewood Elementary School and Wilson High School, later earning his degree from Oregon State University in 1974. Greg took immense pride in raising his own family in the same neighborhood where he grew up, with his children attending the same schools he once did.
Greg dedicated 35 years to education as a respected elementary and middle school teacher and principal in Portland Public Schools before retiring in 2006. He found great fulfillment in working alongside teachers, students, and families, always striving to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment. His passion for education and his unwavering commitment to his students left a lasting impact on countless lives.
A man of integrity, strength, and kindness, Greg found joy in life's simple pleasures: spending time with his family, relaxing at the beach, golfing, caring for his beloved Labradors, and tending to his yard. In his younger years, he was an avid athlete who ran marathons, participated in triathlons, and had a great love for swimming.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Kris; his children, Melissa (Michael) and Kevin (Kari); and his four cherished grandchildren, Margot, Spencer, Hunter, and Violet. He is also survived by his brother, Steve, and sister, Suzy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Anne Jones, and his sister, Cathy. Greg will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and the many students, teachers, and families whose lives he touched over the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Greg's honor. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Providence Hospice for their compassionate care during Greg's final weeks.
Greg's life will be celebrated on Sunday, June 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the McMenamin's Cornelius Pass Roadhouse in Hillsboro, Ore.
