Gussie L. Sherman

Miss Gussie L. Sherman was born on June 6, 1910 in Sibley, Louisiana. She was orphaned early in life and left in the care of relatives. She did not have the luxury of an education, but was a firm believer in success through education. She moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in the early 1930s where she met and later married Ben Sherman Sr. In 1969 she moved to Portland to be with family.

She was the devoted mother of seven children: Helen R. Smith, Ben Sherman Jr., Leona Jarreau, David Sherman Sr., Dorothy Askew, Lena Lewis and Bennie Lewis. In her adult life she attended Zion Mission Baptist Church of Shreveport, Louisiana. On November 28th, 2013, our Lord and Savior called our mother home. She was 103 years old.

Miss Gussie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and by her grandson Donnie McCray.

She is survived by her children: Helen R. Smith, Ben Sherman, Leona Jarreau, David Sherman, Dorothy Askew, Lena Lewis and Bennie Sherman; grandchildren Dushawn Smith, Latrell Woods Jr., Althea Sherman, Donald Sherman, Leasa Sherman, Elton Sherman, Kenneth Sherman, Mark McCray, Allen McCray, Craig McCray, Christi McCray Conant, David Sherman Jr., Rena Sherman, Roderick Lewis, Andrea Lewis, and Chamela Jackson as well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
