

Harold was born on April 29, 1929 to Everett and Grace (Trussell) Berends in Clements, Kansas. His family moved to Parsons, Kansas where he graduated from high school. After high school he went to Pittsburg Teachers College. He was the first in his family to attend college. He graduated and then taught first through eighth grades in a one room school house in SE Kansas. He served in the US Army from 1951 – 1953. While in the Army he met Patricia Glenn, and they were married Oct 11, 1953 after his discharge from the Army. He attended Kansas State University earning a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Agricultural Economics.
Harold and Pat raised four children; Debra, Mark, Cathy and Brenda and moved from Kansas to Denver, Colorado, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Washington DC, then to Portland, OR. Harold worked for Bureau of Land Management for over 30 years. He was recognized for his work on the Alaska oil Pipeline as well as many other awards. He enjoyed traveling and prided himself in visiting all 50 states. Over the years, he gave his time as a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Elks, a Red Cross donator of over 30 gallons and recently a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and attending grandchildren’s sporting events. They were members of Damascus Community Church for the last 40 years.
Harold was preceded in death by his son, Mark and sister, Shirley. He is survived by his wife Pat, daughters Debra (Steve) Miller, Cathy (Marv) Stover and Brenda (Jeff) Cole, fourteen grandchildren, one brother Darrel and four sisters, Verna (Kenneth) VanCleave, Mary Lou Chapman, Evelyn (Gary) Cooper and Thelma (Jerry) Wertz.

Memorial service at Damascus Community Church at 14251 SE Rust Way, Damascus, OR, 97089 on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at 1:00pm. Reception to follow.
