Harold L. Hanel

Surrounded by his family, Harold Lloyd Hanel passed away on June 4, 2015. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, Harold fought and lost a long and brave battle with cancer. Harold was born on May 28, 1931 in Mankato Minnesota to Margaret and Bruno Hanel. In 1952 he married, and is survived by, his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou Hanel. Together they had 5 children, David Hanel (Tracy), Craig Hanel (Tammy), Cindy Hanel, Shari Hanel and Tracy Powell.

In 1960 Harold and Mary Lou moved from Jordan, Minnesota to Portland, Oregon where Harold became a tool and die machinist for Omark Industries. Harold had a long career at Omark Industries, Blount and Electronic Specialists. He retired at age 65.

Harold has 3 surviving brothers, Loren Hanel (Marie), Donald Hanel (Carol), Richard Hanel (Joy). The Hanel boys lost their beloved sister Barbara Hanel to cancer in 1992.

Harold had 8 grandchildren, Jason Hanel (deceased), Kimberlee Hanel, Casey Hanel, Sarah Gibson (Grant), Maggie Miller (Jake), Jamie Hanel, Brittany Leines(Connor) and Zachary Powell. He was also blessed with 2 great grandsons, Max Gibson and Colton Miller.

His services will be held on Friday, June 12 at 1:00 PM at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8705 East Burnside Street, Portland, Oregon where Harold was a member since 1960 and held offices as a Trustee, Deacon and member of the choir.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or to the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU.
