She grew up on her parent’s farm with her 3 siblings during the Great Depression where they grew their own food, lived off the land and were self-sufficient. Growing up during this period in our nation’s history left a huge impression on her. Ione lived her entire life valuing frugality and recycling things, sewing her own clothes, using coupons at grocery stores and canning food from her garden.
She became a schoolteacher first teaching in Corbett; then transferred to David Douglas School District where she spent the remainder of her career until her retirement teaching 3rd graders.
She married and raised a son Gerry and a daughter Bev in NE Portland. Ione had a second chance at love when she met Virgil Hopple. They had a long and happy life together and shared many interests: making holiday crafts and selling antiques, and taking a few exotic trips to Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Holy Land.
She had a passion for gardening even in the rain. Ione was always on the go and never sat still. She thrived on being busy and multi-tasking.
In her 90’s, she asked for a trike bicycle that she rode around the neighborhood.
Ione was blessed in her life with 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 4 great great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered as a good woman with a big heart.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland at 1 pm on Thursday, August 12, 2021. Those attending should gather at the funeral home no later than 12:45 pm to be led into the cemetery for this service.
Ione will be privately laid to rest next to her husband Virgil at Willamette National Cemetery.
