Irma Otillie Lien

November 28, 1923September 5, 2019

Irma Lien went to be with Jesus on September 5, 2019. She was born November 28, 1923 in Thomas, SD, to Carl and Anna Fritz. She was baptized January 13, 1924 and confirmed July 14, 1938 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grover, SD. She graduated from Thomas High School and after graduating, she entered nurses training at Luther Hospital in Watertown, SD. After working several years she moved to Oregon and continued working as a nurse. Irma met Kenneth Lien in Portland and they married April 3, 1948. They had 4 daughters- Joy, Marsha, Sharon and Karen. They were blessed with 70 years of marriage.

Irma was a woman of godly character as shown in her life as a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a friend to so many. She stood for her beliefs and one example is that she wrote to her congressmen. Her talents and hobbies were many. She was involved in volunteering at church, at school, at Albertina Kerr and at Concordia University. She loved to decorate cakes and one that stands out was the Zion Lutheran Church building. She liked to entertain and have family and friends for dinner. Irma and Ken enjoyed traveling and took many trips around the United States as well as abroad with their friends. They especially enjoyed time at the Oregon Coast. She enjoyed her job as a surgical nurse at St Vincents. She loved to sing and sang in both her church choir and in the Lutheran Chorale.

What stood out about Irma was her cheerfulness with a smile on her face and her caring heart for people. One of her wise sayings to us, “If you forget me you have lost nothing, but if you forget Jesus you have lost everything.”

Irma is survived by her daughters Joy (Jim), Marsha (Tom), Sharon (Myron), and son-in-law Bob Stirling; twelve grandchildren: Matthew, Joshua, Vanessa, Noah, Kelley, Nathaniel, Michelle, Lori, Philip, Mark, Amy and Kaitlyn and twelve great grandchildren. Irma is pre-deceased by her husband Ken, her daughter Karen, her parents, her brother Eldon her sisters Mildred, Theresa and Carla.
