James D. Galligan, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the hospital in Vancouver, Wa, on July 30, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in Portland, Oregon, on October 17, 1939, James, known to friends and family as Jim, was a steadfast presence in the lives of all who knew him.
Jim was the beloved son of Jim and Dorotha Galligan and spent his formative years in Portland. He graduated from Franklin High School and pursued higher education at Oregon State University, where he earned a degree in Engineering. His commitment to service was evident early on when he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy's CB (Construction Battalions) division.
In 1967, Jim's life was forever changed when he married Carolyn Galligan at Portland Foursquare Church, where their relationship began as friends. Together, they raised two sons, Jim Galligan Jr. and Mark Galligan, and later enjoyed the joys of being grandparents to Ryan Galligan and Kylee Galligan. His family continued to grow with the addition of great-granddaughters Marlee and Junee, as well as adopted daughter Shyla, with her husband and son, Brent and Vox Spead.
Jim's professional journey included roles as an engineer at Esco Steel Co., involvement with Christ for the Nations, co-ownership of Simplex Manufacturing, and serving as the business administrator at Portland Foursquare Church. His dedication extended beyond his career as he contributed his time and expertise to various other organizations including Global Assistance, Hearts of Love and a variety of other ventures he believed in, including the many years he served on the Portland Foursquare Church Counsel.
As an avid adventurer, Jim found joy in water skiing, snow skiing and traveling whenever he could. He expressed his creativity through wood carving as each new creation turned into everyone's favorite new gifts. He was known for his warm spirit and his favorite saying, “How much was the bill?” which reflected his humorous nature. He was passionate about his faith, teaching Sunday school, leading finance classes, and participating in mission trips around the world.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife Carolyn, his sons Jim Galligan Jr. and Mark Galligan, his grandchildren Ryan Galligan and Kylee Galligan, his great-granddaughters Marlee and Junee, as well as adopted daughter Shyla, with her husband and son, Brent and Vox Spead.
