Born and raised in Portland, OR by Randolph and Catherine Jenness, Jim attended Jesuit High School before joining the Air Force. He was stationed overseas in Germany, where he worked as a Morse Systems Operator, monitoring Soviet military traffic during the Vietnam War.
Upon discharge, Jim returned to Portland State University, joining the TKE Fraternity and graduating with a BS in business. He began employment with Fred Meyer, working his way up to Warehouse Manager. Upon leaving Fred Meyer, he followed his passion for movies and started two video store businesses. He remained in the video business until his retirement nine years ago.
An active member of the community, Jim offered his time and helped out with St.Vincent DePaul, delivering food to the elderly. He served time as a Boy Scout Leader and as a Little League Baseball coach. When not working or volunteering his time, he could often be found fly fishing Oregon’s rivers or attending the local Fishing Club.
Jim’s greatest achievement was in raising two boys and a girl. He devoted himself to their childhood interests, helping out with school events, and teaching them the joy of wilderness hiking and fishing. During one summer he even surprised them with a hot air balloon trip.
Jim faced the long struggle with Alzheimer’s with dignity and fortitude. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Diana Jenness, his children Randy (and his wife Kristi), Brian and Stacey (and her husband James), 6 granddaughters, Alexis, Grace, Daisy, Rylee and Josie, grandson Liam (preceded in death), and his brother Terry and sister Mary.
He will be missed. Please send remembrances to Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon.
