Born in Portland, Oregon, Jim was the only son born to Carl and Edna Thornburg. Jim graduated from West Linn High School in 1951. Upon graduation, he went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1952-1956. After his service, he attended the University of Portland, graduating in 1961 with a BS in Business Administration. It was at the University of Portland where he met Mary Anne Dunlevy, whom he married in 1962. Although they later divorced, they welcomed three children during the course of their marriage: Brian, Tim and Anne.
He began his career in finance working for various CPA firms, including Pete Marwick Mitchell & Co. From 1969-1986, he was Vice President of Finance for Rivera Motors in Hillsboro, Oregon while also holding various leadership positions with their affiliated companies. In 1987, he operated a private accounting practice until his retirement in 1996.
In life, Jim will be remembered for his dry, witty sense of humor and storytelling. He was an avid hiker, reader, and traveler. He was also well known for his meticulous record keeping as evidenced by many three ring binders and legal-size folders! As a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club, he was proud to obtain his 50-year membership pin. After retirement, he served on the board of the Portland Maritime Museum and became active in the West Linn High School Alumni Community. It was during this time he enjoyed bringing former classmates to his home for picnics and joining them for many weekly breakfasts.
As a father, he instilled the importance of hard work and accountability. He also provided his kids space to grow and find independence in their own lives and that of their families, even if it meant less time with him.
Jim is survived by his three children Brian Thornburg (Malina), Tim Thornburg (Kim), and Anne Emerson (Bryan); grandchildren, Nate, Lauren, Megan, Alli, Kevin, Jack, and Lauren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carol Rinkes.
He will be laid to rest in Willamette National Cemetery with Navy Military Honors followed by a celebration of life in the Spring of 2024.
