A question was posed on Class of 1970 FB page, who was your favorite teacher at Andrew Jackson High and Why?  I wrote:
 My fav was Jean Gillen, art teacher. She made me (I really wanted to) join the National Calligraphy contest, I didn't win but my writing to this day reflects her work. I also went on to a successful career as an artist. Most of all, she was simply a wonderful, passionate women who made it a joy to be in school and learn. Thanks Mrs. Gillen, Roy Greene

5/15/16: I read about Jean's passing away in The Catholic Sentinel. What a loving, remarkable woman. She loved to hear me playing the piano in her & Pete's home in Beaver Creek. A lovely woman. Love to all the family.  Denise (Gillen) Miller

For all of you that loved Jean, I posted photos of Jean from our class yearbook and reunion and those of the family and friends that attended her memorial reception.  Unfortunately it included a piece of my art that I posted on my guest book entry thanking Jean for my becoming an artist.  Please forgive me, as I now can't take it down.  I hope that the family will share these photo memories of Jean.

I took drawing from Mrs. Gillen in high school. What affected me most about her was her willingness to put as much effort into the students who were there for an "easy A" as those whose sights were set on becoming serious artists. She was so gracious and encouraging. I will never forget her smile.

Mrs. Gillen, as I knew her, was my Calligraphy teacher one year and I was one of her teacher's assistants the next year.  She was an excellent teacher and a very gracious human being.   She invited Lloyd Reynolds, Robert Palladino from Reed, and another teacher from Marylhurst in to demonstrate letters and talk about life.  I learned about art and so much more from her.

Jean was one of my Art teachers at Andrew Jackson High School.   The impact she has had on my life, and my passion for art, is immeasurable.   The world is a much better place for her being here.   Condolences to her family.

Ms. Daly (Gillen) was my art teacher at Andrew Jackson high school - she was one of the most compassionate and caring instructors I had during those years. Although she had a strong background in fine arts, she was so positive and encouraging to those of us who had varying degrees of talent, but a keen interest in creating.  She had a smile that made me feel so good about myself - so genuine.  Great memories from that class that will always be with those of us lucky enough to be touched by her.

Mrs Gillen was the best.  Her patience, kindness, and grace will remain in our memories. My deepest sympathy to her loving family and friends.

Seeing this notice brought back memories of Mallory Ave and the Daly family.  I never got to meet Jean Daly but loved to hear about the next chapter of the Daly families life.  She sounds like a wonderful lady.  I am one of the Nelson girls that lived across the street and have thought of those early days many time through the years. More than any other teacher, Jean Gillen's impact and teaching has followed me all of my life. When she was my teacher I knew that I would always be welcomed in her classroom, and encouraged - something that I didn't really get elsewhere. As the class "wrangler" for my class (1969, Andrew Jackson HS) I've heard so many comments like mine or "I became an art teacher because of her." As a former teacher myself I used some of the things she taught me with my own students.  When ever I stop at a stoplight and am bored or anxious I think of the time she asked the class "tell me 5 things about this letter" and try to make 5 observation of where I am at the moment.  To me, she exemplified compassion, grace, and acceptance.  When I can center and observe my place in my environment, everything opens up, especially my art.  Yes, thanks Jean - I finally found what I was put on the earth to do, and for that and everything else I have you to thank. We were all blessed to have you in our lives.

Sending the Gillen and Daly families peace and strength to comfort you as you celebrate Jean's life and grieve her passing.  She was warm, gentle and kind to the ones she loved and cared about.  I have so many fond memories of our families get togethers over the years that I will treasure forever. I am forever grateful and blessed by the friendship Jean and my mom, Marian Bird, shared throughout most of their adult years. I hope the memories you shared with Jean will give you comfort, laughter, hope and peace.

Thinking of you all with sadness, but joyful for the impact her wonderful life had on me.

Gillen and Daley families,
Heart felt condolences on the passing of wonderful Jean.  In our neighborhood we knew her as Mrs. Gillen.  Though her brood was large, she always welcomed we neighbor kids into her well appointed and friendly home.
