

Joan was born January 5, 1931 in Aurora, Oregon to Lowell and Florence (Hepler) Friton. She was a 1949 graduate of Molalla High School, and worked for Lipman’s, Esco Corp., and then as an administrative assistant at Oak Grove Elementary School for most of her working life. Joan enjoyed sewing, quilting, doing puzzles and crosswords, and loved bald eagles.
On March 19, 1955 she married Richard John Martin in Colton, Oregon. Richard preceded her in death in 2015, and she will be laid to rest with him in private services at Willamette National Cemetery.
She was also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters: Louis, Willis, and Glade Friton, and Barbara Jackson, Emily Bean, and Sylvia Owings.
Joan is survived by her daughter Melinda Ashley and husband Don of Happy Valley, son John Martin of Hillsboro, Oregon; grandchildren Jennifer Ellis of Oregon City and Ryan Ellis and wife Anna of Marietta, Georgia; and step-grandchildren Nicole Ashley of Newport, Oregon, Natalie Stoner and husband Chris of Corvallis, Oregon, and Trevyn Ashley and wife Nichole of West Linn, Oregon.
She is also survived by great-grandchildren Brandon Ellis of Happy Valley, Isabella Ellis of Happy Valley, and Nash Ellis of Marietta, Georgia, and by step-great-grandchildren Allen Jennings and wife Anna of Delta Junction, Alaska, Emily Jennings of Newport, Oregon, Trenton Ashley of West Linn, Oregon, McKenna Ashley of West Linn, Oregon, Hailey Ashley of West Linn, Oregon, and Everett Stoner of Corvallis, Oregon, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Joan’s life took place at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.
