Joe Wesely Cobbs was born on November 19, 1923, in Marshall, Texas to George W. and Nancy Cobbs. He was the second and youngest child born to this union. Joe was inducted into the service during World War II upon reaching adulthood. In Paris, France, Joe served as a medic before being honorably discharged in 1945.
After the war, Joe moved to California to work as a logger. There, he met the love of his life, Cleo Cobbs, in 1946. Joe and Cleo were married in 1947. To this union, their daughter Cheryl was born. Joe started his career at ESCO in 1950, working there until he retired in the 1980s.
In 1966, Joe was formally ordained as a deacon at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was a deacon for over 55 years when he passed. Joe was deeply involved at New Hope and Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church until his health declined.
Joe was known in his family for his prayers and devotion to God. He prayed at every family event, big or small. He was also known for his love of cameras and photography, filling numerous photo albums with pictures dating back to the early 1950s. He documented all of his family, friends, and trips from all over the country in those photo albums.
More than anything, Joe was known for his dedication to being a great father, grandpa, great-grandpa, and uncle. He loved his family deeply. Joe gave Cleo, Cheryl, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren endearing nicknames (“Darling,” “Baby,” “Scooter,” “Man,” “Pretty Baby,” and “Little Man”) that he kept calling them, even into adulthood.
He leaves to cherish his memory his lifetime companion of 75 years Cleo Cobbs (“Darling”); close cousin Betty Walker; niece Nancy Kimmons; daughter Cheryl Profit (“Baby”); grandchildren Le Cheryl King (“Scooter”) and Tommy Profit (“Man”), all of Portland, OR; great-grandchildren Madeline (“Pretty Baby”) of New York, NY and Noah (“Little Man”) of Portland, OR, and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews.
There will not be a funeral due to COVID-19. Thank you to everyone for your prayers, support, phone calls, flowers, and kindness during this time. Joe lived a long life, and we were so lucky to have him for so long.
The viewing will be held at Ross Hollywood Chapel on February 9, 2022 4pm-8pm, followed by a closed repass for close family.
