John had a joyful childhood, with grandparents, many aunts and uncles and numerous cousins. Learning to fish as a toddler, it carried throughout his life, as did his fondness for family. A man of few words, his thoughts and feelings were deep, expressed in actions. He started working odd jobs on Sauvies Island where he grew up and gained a strong work ethic throughout his life. He was hired by Northwest Grocery/United Grocers until 1988.
John graduated from Scappoose High School in 1960. In 1969 He married Suzanne Hall and their son was born in 1972. He and his wife returned to Portland from Central Oregon in 1997.
He continued his love for fishing, always with Suzi and Jack. Later, he also got the Hot Rod Bug and loved to show off their beautiful purple '58 Chevy, and all the wonderful people met through the hobby.
John was a very proud Vietnam ('68-'69) Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army as Spec 5 earning several Metals of Achievement.
He had a sure wit and Red Neck humor that touched all who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
John is survived by his wife of just shy of 47 years, Suzi, his son Jack and Natalie, daughter Laura and Aaron Gilles, their lovable Chesapeake Bay "Rosie", sisters Christy Schreiner, and Karen Phillips, grandson Justin Evans and many cousins.
At John's request there will be no funeral. A Memorial Gathering will be held at later date for Family and Friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to OHSU Institute For Cancer Research or The Oregon Humane Society.
