It was my privilege to meet John in his loving parents' home. His radiating warmth and enthusiasm for his family and the soldiers with whom he served filled the room. His loss is immeasurable.

John and I were on the boxing team. He had a small circle; If you were in his circle , you were in his circle. He was full of love. My Brother. May your family and friends celebrate your life .

John and I grew up together as neighbors and he always felt like my little brother. I had the privilege of spending much of my childhood with him and his family, with too many fond memories to even count. John was typically one of the smartest people in any room he stood in, but never made you feel that way. He was polite, smart, easy-going, and driven. I’m saddened I let too much time go by without reconnecting with him. Sending my love to the whole Russell family.

Russell was a dear friend. He brought his passion and determination to everything he set his mind to. My favorite memory was after graduating West Point, we took a backpack trip up the Washington coast. While in the parking lot preparing to depart, a gentleman spotting Russell’s .357 magnum on his hip. The gentleman commented “Is that your Bear repellent?”, Russell, confused, replied “No, it’s my everything repellent”. His wit, humor, and dedication to friends and family will truly be missed.

John Russell was a dear friend of mine at West Point and his loss hurts all of us deeply. John was a year below me at school and I remember meeting him through a roommate of mine who practiced grappling with him. For those who don't know, John was a VERY talented athlete and could tie you in a knot on the mat! Beyond his tough exterior, John was kind, loyal, and made you feel like a million bucks when you could get a smile out of him. I'll never forget going to NYC with him many times and I doubt I'll ever be able to walk those same streets without thinking of him. He made an impact on me and I'll never forget him.
