It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved John Thomas Washington, who departed this life on September 20, 2024, at the age of 74. Surrounded by family and love, John peacefully transitioned, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and generosity.
John Thomas Washington was born on December 24, 1950, in Portland, Oregon, to John Thomas Washington Senior and Carol Jean (Wilson) Washington. From an early age, John demonstrated a deep love for his family and community—always working hard to ensure those around him were taken care of—which would go on to shape his life and the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
John was the oldest son and brother to his six siblings, Viola Washington, Carolann Washington, Pamela Washington, Dorothy Washington, Richard Washington, and Larry Anderson. Later in life, John married Robin Grisby and was married for 20 years. Together, they had two sons, Andre Washington and Terrance Washington. John had two more children, Jasmine Austin and Zeke Anderson, and later became a grandfather to Sidney Washington. John was not only a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather but also a cherished friend to many. His greatest joys came from spending time with family and being in nature—especially deep sea, lake, and river fishing. Many remember John for the handsome smile he beamed after a successful day of catching salmon, cod, bluegill, crappie, and seabass and his generosity when sharing it with family and friends.
Throughout his life, John was known for being extremely hardworking, kind, with a good sense of humor, and compassionate for others. He demonstrated that compassion while serving in the United States Army as a Specialist 4 in the Military Police unit during the Vietnam War, putting his life at risk for the benefit of all Americans. After returning from the war, John became the first entrepreneur in his immediate family by establishing a successful commercial and residential window cleaning business serving clients across the Portland metro region. Known for his warm smile, open heart, and helping hand, John was always ready to serve others—from his family to his community. John touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his siblings Viola, Pamela, Dorothy, Richard, and Larry; his children, Andre, Terrance, Jasmine, and Zeke; and his grandchild, Sidney; who will forever carry his love in their hearts. John was preceded in death by his mother, Carol; father, John; and sister, Carolann. We imagine their long-awaited reunion has been beautiful.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024 at Zeller Chapel of the Roses in Portland, Oregon, where we will gather to remember his humanity and legacy. The family requests that condolences, flowers, and any other memories be sent to Zeller Chapel.
Though we mourn the loss of John Thomas Washington, we are comforted in knowing that he is reunited with our loved ones and that his spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.
