Joseph McCarthy was born January 2, 1925 in Brookline, Massachusetts. He had a full and happy life and was 89 years old when he passed peacefully in his sleep on July 23, 2014. Joe grew up on the east coast and fondly remembered his friends there after he moved to Portland, Oregon. Like so many of the greatest generation, Joe answered his call for duty just after his 18th birthday. His WWII tour of duty with the 26th infantry was impressive. He served in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was a sharpshooter, combat Infantryman and trench row fighter right after the landings in Normandy. His medals included a Purple Heart, Victory Medal, Good Medal of Conduct, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and an American Theater Campaign Ribbon. Like so many others, Joe rarely spoke of his years fighting in the war; there were just too many difficult memories. After returning from the war, he married his wife, Helen and spent most of his career working for John Hancock Insurance. Helen and Joe had three children: Brian, Paula and Michele. Joe had to endure the death of his beloved son, Brian and daughter, Paula in later years, which was very difficult for him. His youngest daughter, Michele, who lovingly cared for him during his final years, survives him. Joe was also very proud of his two beautiful grandchildren, Heidi and Chelsea. Joe was an active member of the VFW, Elks Club, and Footprinters and volunteered weekly at the Hollywood Senior Center. He enjoyed golf, basketball, fishing, NASCAR, reading, and most of all he was a “fire buff” and appreciated and loved the industry and firemen who risk their lives for us daily. Joe is now with his wife, son and daughter and all of those who have passed before him. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hollywood Senior Center located at 1820 NE 40th Ave., Portland, Oregon 97212 on Saturday, August 9th at 11am.
