Josephine M. Rivelli, a lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on March 3, 1930, in Portland to Emilio and Giovannina Rivelli, Josephine lived a full and meaningful life rooted in faith, family, and service.
She grew up in southeast Portland and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, St. Mary’s Academy and sewing and millinery school. Sacred Heart remained a constant in her life, and she was a devoted lifelong member of the parish. She was deeply involved in her parish community as a member of the Altar Society and an oblate of St. Benedict.
Josephine worked for forty plus years at the Mill End Store in the bridal department. Brides would ask for her by name when they came in to plan their weddings. She was a true expert when it came to fabrics and her sewing was impeccable. She made all of her own clothes including heavy wool coats.
When she lived in her home, Josephine loved bringing people together. She would invite family over for dinner, preparing big delicious meals that made everyone feel like they were dining in Italy.
After she retired and moved to The Springs, she continued sharing her talents by making towels with printed borders to give to her fellow residents, sharing her kindness in her own way.
Josephine also gave her time through volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and the Altar Society at church. She created many altar cloths and linens that are still used today at Sacred Heart, a lasting reminder of her care and devotion.
Family meant everything to Josephine. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Louis, Harry and Seraphino Rivelli. She was a beloved aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt. She had 15 nieces and nephews, 19 great nieces and nephews and 7 great-great nieces and nephews. She thought of all of us every day and prayed for us. She loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. She will be missed.
