Juanita Noe Cox was born on August 20, 1919, in rural Eastern Tennessee. The third of five children born to Hugh R. Sr. and Bessie A. (Foster) Noe. Juanita grew up to be a person of deep religious beliefs, hard to find dignity, and love and devotion to her family and friends. She had an ability to reach out to others and befriended individuals from many walks of life. God was the source of her strength and doing His will was the focus of her life.
Juanita grew up on farms in Tennessee and graduated from high school not far from where she was born. Following high school she became a licensed hair stylist, and over the course of her life she owned and operated successful beauty salons, in Tennessee and Washington state. She had a devoted clientele, many who were her friends. She had a strong work ethic, working until age 70.
In 1941, Juanita married another Tennessee native, James W. (Jack) Cox. The couple had three children, Jacqueline Clay, J. Alece Cox and Ray A. Cox. In 1960, the family moved to Kennewick, Washington and joined Kennewick Baptist Church where Juanita became an active member. She taught Sunday School and served on several committees. She developed many long and deep friendships with people there.
Juanita loved to garden, often growing beautiful flowers and large vegetable gardens in the hot Kennewick sun. She also enjoyed traveling. Her many trips included Israel, Morocco, France, Spain, Korea, and China as well as trips to visit family in Tennessee.
In 2005, Juanita moved to Milwaukie, Oregon , where she lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Tom and Jackie Clay. With their assistance she once again laid down roots. She became a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church and made many new friends. She was also able to become more involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren that live in the Portland area.
Juanita Noe Cox was a true child of God. Through her many years as a wife, mother, church member, a business person and friend, God was her source of strength and direction. She was an example of God's love, wisdom, and faithfulness.
In honor of Juanita we mention her surviving family: Thomas and Jacqueline Clay (daughter); John P. Murphy and J. Alece Cox (daughter); Ray A. (son) and Linda Cox. Her grandchildren are: Brad and Jennifer Phillips, Cresslyn Clay, Doug and Lynn Ann Troxell, Jeremy and Megan Hernandez.
