6/23/1921 - 12/13/2020
June was born to Ole and Geneva Amundson on June 23, 1921 in Caledonia, North Dakota. She was the eldest of three daughters. She grew up just across the state border in Shelly, Minnesota where her parents owned a cafe. The family moved to Portland, Oregon during WWII where her father worked in the ship yards.
June worked for Meier & Frank doing modeling and clerking. In 1944 while riding the bus to work she met Roy Lamb and they married six weeks later. For their honeymoon, they hitch-hiked across the United States working and making friends along the way. They ended up in Massachusetts where Roy's mother resided. They worked there for awhile before heading west again, living in Flagstaff, Arizona and Long Beach, California before returning to Portland where their daughter Barbara was born in 1947. Since Roy was in construction work they moved quite often spending time in Hermiston and Eugene, Oregon and Skagit, Washington.
Eventually they both took jobs a Crown Zellerbach in Camas, Washington where they worked until 1969 when they quit their jobs and established an outdoor activities organization for youth called the American Wilderness Foundation emphasizing building confidence, outdoor skills and friendships. It offered bike, canoe, back-packing, cross country skiing and rock-climbing trips around the northwest during its thirty year existence. Their office was in St. Johns so they were also active in the community. They were honored one year as Grand Marshalls of the St. Johns Parade. They retired from the foundation in 2000 and also moved from Camas to Portland to be closer to family.
June was a talented artist and left many beautiful oil paintings for family and friends to enjoy. She also loved family history, photography, crossword puzzles, gardening and traveling. Christmas with her cousins in Norway in 1992 was one of her favorite trips. In 2003 she was able to enjoy another trip to Norway and travel all the way to southern Italy by car. She also enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Alaska and Florida.
June enjoyed life and was enjoyed by all around her. Her beautiful smile and warmth will be missed by everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by Roy; her parents; and her sister, Lorraine.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Paul); two grandchildren, Sarah and David (Taylor); and two great grandchildren, Norah and Harrison; sister, Penny; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There will be no gathering now, but if COVID 19 calms down, a celebration of June's life is planned for what would have been her 100th birthday in June.
