She was born in her mother’s hometown of Sycamore, Illinois, moving to Portland, Oregon a short time later when her father completed his Army enlistment. Portland was her home for her entire life.
Kathleen attended grade school at The Madeline in Portland and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1975. She was fiercely proud to be a 1979 graduate of Oregon State University.
She met Joel, “the love of her life” during her senior year of high school while he was attending Central Catholic. They married in 1980, celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary in August. Her commitment to family was boundless. She loved being a wife, mother, aunt, and sister, and was ecstatic to be “G-Ta” to her five grandchildren. Kathleen lived to care for her family. She was the life of every family gathering, lighting up the room with love and laughs. Her hugs, smile and sense of humor will be missed.
Kathleen committed her career to education, initially as a classroom teacher at All Saints School in Northeast Portland, then dedicating nearly three decades to working with adults as an academic advisor at Portland Community College. Her generous heart and natural abilities as a communicator and problem solver made her a natural fit. She was proud of the work she did and the students she helped. Advising was her calling and a career she poured her heart into daily. She was much loved by coworkers and the students she helped. Kathleen was incredibly proud that all three of her children followed in her footsteps and became educators.
Kathleen is survived by her husband Joel, children Riley (Megan), Danny (Cynthia) and Marianne Harrington (Nick), five grandchildren (Barton, Elliot, Francis, Joanna and Hazel), her seven siblings (Jim, Molly Moran-Yandle, Joe, Eileen Rilatt, Mary Pat Poteet, John and Sheila Connelly), step mother Sue Moran and her two children (Jim Gaittens and Laura Luthi). She is preceded in death by her mother Marianne Trapp Moran and father James Carr Moran.
Recitation of the Rosary will be at 10:30am, Friday September 9th followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00am at All Saints Catholic Church, 3847 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97232. A lunch reception will follow in the church hall with private interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery later in the day.
