Kok Chen passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, just weeks before his 77th birthday. Born on May 20, 1948, in Bangkok, Thailand, Kok was the child of Hsien Tse Chen and Hsiu Ho. He spent his early years in both Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before beginning a distinguished academic and professional journey.
Kok earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 1969. He continued his studies at Stanford University, receiving a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1971. Though he pursued doctoral work at Stanford through 1979, Kok chose not to complete his Ph.D., preferring hands-on innovation over formal accolades.
As a Distinguished Engineer, Scientist or Technologist (DEST) at Apple Computer, Kok contributed significantly to the advancement of computing technologies until retiring in 2005. His inventive mind led to over a dozen patents during his time at Apple.
Earlier at Stanford’s Radar Astronomy group, Kok designed a direct-coupled Asymmetric Data Modem that helped restore access for Computer Science and AI students. A few hundred units were built, with one still displayed at Stanford’s Gates Computer Science Building—an enduring symbol of Kok’s ingenuity.
Kok also developed a C compiler for the PDP-10 computer, earning recognition on the Computer History page where the source code remains accessible.
An avid amateur radio operator with an Extra Class license under the call sign W7AY, Kok maintained a lifelong passion for ham radio and radio astronomy. He generously shared his knowledge with colleagues and fellow hobbyists around the world.
Kok was known for his quiet determination, generosity, and many accomplishments. A steadfast friend and partner, he was always supportive and ready to lend a hand or share his knowledge with co-workers and fellow hobbyists—many of whom he had never met or knew only in passing.
Kok is mourned by his partner Agnes Kwan; siblings Rita, Chauncey, Mary, and May; and their spouses.
A memorial service will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens on May 8, 2025.
