OBITUARY

Larry Lee Lyons

February 18, 1931November 12, 2020

Larry Lee Lyons passed away on November 12, 2020, at home in Aloha, Oregon, after a long illness. Larry was born on February 18, 1931, in Hood River, Oregon, to George Thomas and Alice (Jackson) Lyons and was 89 at the time of his passing.

Everyone who knew Larry would agree: He loved golf, a good joke, and his wife, Karen, his best friend and companion for 53 years. He also had an affinity for butter, cooking, his garden, and spicy mustard. He could make friends with anyone from any culture and enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. with his wife in an RV. They made many friends along the way, especially in their winter residence of Yuma, Arizona.

Larry grew up fishing all around Hood River. He was an honest, hard worker (like his hero, John "The Duke" Wayne), having driven logging trucks, worked as a lineman for the railroad, and as a truck driver for many years around Portland until he retired.

Larry proudly served in the United States Navy in the Korean War and the United States Air Force and cherished the memories of his time in Germany and on Saipan. He was also a proud member of the Chara Association for his ship, USS Chara (AKA-58).

He is survived by his wife, Karen Louise (McPike) Lyons of Aloha, Oregon; his sons, Rockne Clay Helms of Portland, Oregon; Larry Lyons Jr. of Dallas, Texas, and his wife Julie; his daughter, Lisa Lyons of Gresham, Oregon; his grandchildren, Brandon Lyons of Placerville, California, and his wife Priscilla; Sierra Lyons-Allmon of Gresham; Conor Lyons of Dallas, Texas; and Morgan Helms of Portland. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Jean (Lyons) Mills Nelson and her husband Richard of McMinnville, Oregon, and brother, Roger Gardner and his wife, Jennifer, of Olympia, Washington. Larry’s daughter Pamela Lyons preceded him in death in 1995. He was also preceded in death by his brother George Thomas Lyons.

Chapel services are planned for 1 p.m., Friday, November 21st, 2020, at Skyline Cemetery of Portland, Oregon. Larry’s service will be shared via Skyline’s Facebook live.

I’m sorry for your loved ones passing. I have many fond memories of Larry as I grew up with his son Cubby. Larry always came across to me as a quiet man, but always spoke what was on his mind. He also had a sense of humor and I always admired the fact Larry and his wife Karen were best friends. In all my visits to the house over the years (40 years) nothing changed. Larry was always friendly, had a smile on his face, was interested in everything we talked about and I don’t think the recliner he sat in ever changed in the 40 years I knew him! He was a good man and will be missed.
