Larry was born on Friday, January 13, 1933 and died on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Larry was born to Everett and Nina Trogen in Portland, Oregon. His father was a very fine carpenter and his mother kept a spotless home and set a wonderful example of love. They were a very happy couple and wonderful to be around. He had an older sister, Bernice Trogen Bashlow who adored her younger brother, and helped take care of him. He was hit by a bicyclist when he was 7 years old causing a tumor on his brain. He was paralyzed from the waist down and they told his parents that he would never walk or talk again. His praying mother, prayed him well and he eventually walked and talked again. No doubt about it, he had a purpose to fulfill in life.
Larry was the President of his class at Cleveland High School in Portland, Oregon. This is where he met his high school sweetheart, Muriel McDowell, while performing in a play. To this day, no one but Muriel knows if they kissed behind the hat or not. They were married in 1955, and just celebrated their 55th anniversary on Aug 31, 2010. What an accomplishment this is in today's world, as so few will ever make it 55 years together. It takes a total commitment, lots of love and a faith in Christ, to withstand all that life throws your way in a relationship.
Larry was an avid golfer and he put himself through college on golf scholarships. If you think about this, it is amazing for someone who was never to walk again! He graduated from PSU, OSU, & Princeton Theological Seminary. He was a teaching fellow at UofW. He served as an associate pastor for 6 years at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Yakima, Washington. He was a senior pastor at Hope Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon for 34 years, serving a total of 40 years in the ministry.
Larry touched many lives through crusades, pastor conferences, bible studies, prison ministries and assemblies at public schools. He made a total of 28 Asian mission trips, which included 27 to the Philippines. This resulted in approximately 60,000 people giving their life to Jesus. He loved the Lord with all his heart and was a faithful servant to the very end. We rejoice that he is with Jesus Christ forever.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel Trogen; his first daughter, Laurie Jordan Schiffmann & husband Franz Schiffmann; his second daughter Lucy Hancock and husband Bryan Hancock; his son, Andrew Trogen & wife Jaylyn Trogen; his granddaughters, Crystal Jordan and Shanise Jordan; his grandson, Jake Hancock; his step-grandson, Ryan Schiffmann and great-granddaughter, Dakota Tingley. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bernice Bashlow; and cousin, Stanley Trogen. His sister Bernice died on July 27, 2010 and cousin Stanley died on September 11, 2010. The three Trogen's died within less than 2 months of each other, all from heart complications.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to various ministries Larry was involved in will be accepted by family members. A memorial service will be held at City Bible Church on Saturday, Sept. 25th, 2010. Please arrive at 1:00pm.
