Leonard grew up in northeast Portland and was a graduate of Grant High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1971. He served honorably as a technician with the Air National Guard, retiring in 2008. He met Anette Hering in Portland in 1973 and they were joined in marriage on May 24, 1974.
During his time in the military, Leonard transported multiple aircraft to Evergreen Air Museum in McMinnville, including the SR-71 from Edwards AFB in California. He enjoyed traveling - especially to warm locales such as Hawaii, Key West and Nassau - but had visited most of the United States and many foreign countries.
He was ready to add humor to (almost) any situation, but was also someone who could always be counted on to help others, and he expressed his love for his family in many ways.
Leonard will be remembered by his wife Anette Pilger; daughters Heather Pilger and Lindsey Pilger and her husband Nick Swan; siblings Donald Pilger and his wife Barbara and Barbara Cunningham and her husband David; and by grandchildren Caleb, Xander, Laurel, and Marian. He was preceded in death by his sister Judy Koppelo.
Mr. Pilger will be honored with a committal service at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on Friday, November 17, 2023. Guests are asked to gather at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home by 10:30 am in order to be led in procession into Willamette National for the 11:00 am shelter service. All are welcome to then join the family for a Celebration of Life at 1:00 pm at 6937 SE 267th Avenue in Gresham.
Donations to www.camprosenbaum.org in Leonard’s name would be welcomed by his family.
