Leslie Alonzo Spikes Jr.

Leslie Spikes Jr. was born on October 5, 1928 in Weed, California to Leslie A. Spikes Sr. of Orange, Texas and Minerva Spikes of Bayou Mound, Mississippi. He was one of 8 children: Leslie Jr., Vernon, Pete, Ionzamae (deceased), Anniemae (deceased), Rosetta (deceased), Robert (deceased) and Alonzo (deceased). He attended grade school at Frenzo Colony, and graduated from Edison High School. Soon after graduating Spikes joined the United States Military for 8 years, during which he played football as a hobby. He also had a love for keeping his cars clean. During his military years he met Vertie Barr in 1949 and they soon married in 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Spikes celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Leslie Spikes Jr. worked for ESCO for 42 years and for Rudy Nelson Tire Company for 30 years. He later retired in 1992. He was a faithful member of Allen Temple Church and was also a member of the Steward Board and the Men of Praise Choir. Left to cherish the memory of Leslie Spikes, Jr.: his wife, Vertie Spikes; children, Leslie Louis, Anitaan Ann, Brenda Jean, and Marvin Anthony; 13grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. The Angels took him home at 10:30am on December 3, 2017.
