Vern was born February 25, 1931 in Fergus Falls, MN, one of four children of Ignott and Edith (Strand) Swenson. He moved to Oregon at age 29 (an uncle and aunt had already relocated). He worked for Northwest Airlines as a freight handler, retiring in 1994. In 1969 he married Marvel Louise Sears in Portland.
Among his interests were home canning – especially jelly – fishing for salmon on the Columbia and trout at Central Oregon Lava Lake, hunting elk in Heppner (which he did into his 80s), shopping, antiquing, and ‘collecting,’ and especially raising flowers, particularly dahlias. Vern and Marvel traveled all over the world – Germany, Australia, Sweden (several times to visit family). He made friends wherever he went, and was well-known and well-liked.
Mr. Swenson was preceded in death by his wife Marvel in 2004, and by his sister Twila, and is survived by
Children Jim Swenson and wife Sharon of Eagle Creek, OR and Michael Swenson and life partner Peggy Sue of Estacada, OR;
A brother, Duane Swenson and wife Doris of Delano, MN and a sister, Delores Larson and husband Byron of Stillwater, MN;
former wife Theresella Whisenant of Ridgefield, WA;
and by two granddaughters, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
Donations in Vern’s name would be greatly appreciated by the family, and may be made to either the Paralyzed Veterans of America or the Leukemia Foundation.
