Lucille Doris Brunner was born January 18th, 1922 to Gustav and Mildred Sommerfeld at their home in the Sellwood district of Portland. She and her older sister, Esther, attended Sellwood Grade School. Lucille graduated from Washington High School in 1939 and went on to attend business school to become a secretary. She was married to Lawrence Brunner at St.Paul Lutheran Church on September 10th, 1942 and then they moved to San Diego during the war years. Their first son, David, was born there in 1944, but when the war ended, they moved to Tacoma, Washington. Their second son, Ron, was born in 1946 when they moved back to Portland. They moved into their home on Stark Street in 1951 and welcomed their third child, Anne, in 1953. Beth joined the family in 1955, and then Lucille went back to work as a secretary in the central warehouse for Portland Public Schools. She also was active as the treasurer and attendance monitor for St. Paul Lutheran Sunday School for many years. Since she was baptized at St. Paul’s, Lucille was the longest living member of the church at the time of her death, over 96 years. Her family was her first priority and she was always there for them. She was greatly loved for her kindness, gentle soul and fun sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, son Ron, and is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be sent in Lucille’s name to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, at 3880 SE Brooklyn Street, Portland, Oregon 97202.
