Cụ bà Maria Lý Thi Y sinh năm 1922 tại Trà Cổ, Quang Ninh, Bắc Việt trong một gia đình Công Giáo truyền thống. Bà kết hôn năm 1943 với ông Đaminh Nguyễn Văn Chứng và sinh hạ được tám người con, gồm bốn trai và bốn gái. Năm 1954 bà cùng chồng và các con di cư vào miền Nam và định cư tại Hố Nai, Biên Hòa, tỉnh Đồng Nai. Năm 1971 người chồng thân yêu của bà đã đột ngột qua đời sau một tai nạn giao thông. Năm 1992 bà đoàn tụ cùng con cháu tại Hoa Kỳ. Sau 22 năm định cư tại thành phố Portland, tiểu bang Oregon, bà đã tạ thế tại gia vào lúc 18 giờ 30 ngày 26 tháng 5 năm 2014. Thánh Lễ phát tang, đưa chân và an táng của bà đã được cử hành tại giáo xứ Đức Mẹ Lavang, Portland, Oregon. Sau đó theo ước nguyện của bà, ngày 18 tháng 6 năm 2014, các con đã đưa linh cửu của bà về an táng tại nghĩa trang giáo xứ Xuân Trà (Trà Cổ II), Việt Nam. Các con và các cháu, chắt vô cùng thương tiếc sự ra đi của bà, nhưng với Đức Tin Công Giáo các con và các cháu, chắt hy vọng sẽ gặp lại bà trong ngày cánh chung. Nguyện xin Thiên Chúa nhân từ tha thứ những thiếu xót của bà và đón nhận bà vào nước thiên đàng.
Mrs. Maria Y Thi Ly was born in 1922 in Tra Co, Quang Ninh, Bac Viet within a traditional Catholic family. She got married in 1943 to Mr. Daminh Chung Van Nguyen and had eight children, four boys and four girls. In 1954, Mrs. Ly and her husband together with the children migrated to the South of Viet Nam and lived at Ho Nai, Bien Hoa, Dong Nai province. In 1971, her beloved husband passed away unexpectedly after a transportation accident. In 1992, she reunited with her children and grandchildren in the United States. After 22 years living in Portland, Oregon, she passed away peacefully at home at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 26, 2014. The Mourning Ritual, Farewell and Funeral Mass were held at Our Lady of Lavang Parish, Portland, Oregon. In honoring Mrs. Ly’s wish, her children transported her back to Viet Nam and buried her at the cemetery of Xuan Tra Parish (Tra Co II). The children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are very saddened by her passing; however, with the belief in the resurrection of the death, they hope to reunite with her in heaven. May the loving and merciful God pardon all her short-comings and take her into the heavenly kingdom.
