July 18, 1921-July 10, 2024
Olympia, Washington
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many, Maddie Wells (aka Pretty Grandma) at the remarkable age of 102. She lived a life filled with love, laughter, and resilience.
Born on July 18, 1921, at home in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Maddie passed away peacefully (one week before her 103rd birthday) on July 10, 2024, at St. Peter’s Providence Hospital in Olympia, Washington.
Her early years were spent growing up in Montreal. On June 8, 1946, Maddie married John Bernard Brosseau; a daughter, Suzanne, was born in 1950. The family immigrated to the United States in 1963 from Montreal and made a home in Portland, Oregon. John preceded Maddie in death on April 29, 1987.
Maddie met William (Bill) O. Wells in 1994 and they married on November 17, 2004. Bill preceded Maddie in death on February 19, 2009. Shortly after Bill’s passing, Maddie moved to Olympia, Washington to live close to her daughter, Suzanne.
Maddie was a lifelong learner, always curious and eager to explore new horizons and make new friends. She devoured books, both printed and audible when her eyesight failed, loved to travel, especially on cruises, and fed her creative spirit with watercolor painting, knitting, and dressing “to the nines” which is how she acquired the nickname of “Pretty Grandma.” Her adventurous spirit inspired those around her to embrace life’s journey with open arms.
Throughout her life, Maddie was someone who approached life with a positive outlook, a hopeful attitude, and a sense of humor which made her an unwavering source of encouragement and comfort for her family and friends. She dedicated herself to the values of kindness, compassion, and perseverance, always reaching out to others in friendship.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and grace. Madeleine Wells is survived by her daughter Suzanne (Jerry) Furth, grandchildren Aaron (Julie) Miller, Ryan (Kimberly) Pieper, Emily (Sean) Vestal, Bradley (Nayeli) Pieper, Paul (Heidi) Furth, and great-grandchildren Trent & Vivian Miller; Olivia Goodman, Riley & Reed Pieper, Sofia Hartner; Madeleine, Ava & Gabrielle Vestal; Tianna Pieper; Sarah and Ellie Furth; all who will forever cherish her memory.
