

Marianne LaBarre, age 81, passed away suddenly on September 21, 2026. She was born on November 6, 1944, in Minneapolis, to the late Roy and Mary Ann (Kenefic) LaBarre. She led a life full of purpose, inspired by her deep spirituality and love of God. She was a life partner, sister, friend, aunt, leader, teacher, and counselor. She fulfilled all these relationships with generosity, love, abundant joy, and a kind, genuine spirit. A woman of many talents and several careers, Marianne brought warmth, enthusiasm, and a big smile to all her undertakings. She leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Marianne grew up in Eugene, OR, the youngest of three children. She attended the University of Oregon and Marylhurst College before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names in 1965. She remained a Sister until 1991. During those years she taught elementary school, became a spiritual director, held leadership roles including serving as the Novitiate Director for new Sisters. She moved to Seattle in 1980 where she ran a retreat house and began working at Seattle University part time. In time, she became a full-time faculty member at Seattle University, School of Theology and Ministry. She demonstrated unwavering dedication and excellence in her work for the Seattle University community for over 30 years.
Marianne celebrated many accomplishments during these years.
She earned a Doctorate of Education in Leadership while working full time. She taught, offered spiritual direction to many, counseled students and developed two leadership programs of which she was particularly proud – Executive Leadership for the School of Business, and Leadership for Senior Ministers in the School of Theology. She also became a certified Soul Collage facilitator and offered many spiritual and personal growth programs over the years.
She took partial retirement in 2010, decreasing her work at Seattle University, but continuing spiritual direction and coaching to her many clients. In 2015, Marianne and her life partner, Peg O’Rourke, moved to Portland to be closer to family. During the following years she participated in the founding of North Star Village nonprofit organization, including serving two years as co-chair and chair of the Village. Most recently she moved to Holladay Park Plaza retirement community which afforded her many new service opportunities and many new and wonderful friends.
She is survived by her life partner, Peg O’Rourke; her brother Jerome LaBarre; sister-in-law Mary Nemmers; nephew Paul LaBarre; and nieces Sarah LaBarre, Kady LaBarre, and Suzanne Hicks Grantham. Her warmth, constant smile, and generous loving spirit will not be forgotten.
