Marilyn Alice Pollock was born April 2, 1937, in Portland. She was the daughter and only child to William G. and Mary (Dean) Pollock. She was raised in Portland and surrounded and loved by many cousins. She graduated from Washington High School in 1955. While at Washington, she was a proud member of the Colonials rally squad.
Marilyn exchanged wedding vows with Richard H. Weitzel August 18, 1956, at Moreland Presbyterian Church. The two were engaged Valentine’s Day of that same year.
Marilyn and Richard were blessed with four children: Steven W., David H., Susan M., and Richard L.
Marilyn was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She never worked outside the home except during a brief stint as an office worker for Quaker Oats when she and Dick were first married. She raised her children and she lived all of her married life in Portland, with the exception of the time between 2003 and 2013 when she and Dick lived on the coast in Neskowin. In Neskowin, Marilyn was a proud member of Nesko Women’s Club and was a S.M.A.R.T. Program volunteer.
There were a chosen few who were allowed to address Marilyn by her nickname “Big Red”. She stood 5 feet tall and if the situation called for it she could get a little taller pretty quickly.
She was a fast-pitch softball fan and spent many happy years watching Dick play ball and visiting with family and friends at Erv Lind Field.
Marilyn was an avid gardener and family favorites were her sweet peas (Dick was the pea stringer). She was also a very adept tole painter.
Marilyn traveled extensively and was proud to claim that she visited 49 of our 50 states. She made many trips to destinations in Europe and South America. In 2006, Marilyn and Dick shared a memorable cruise to Alaska in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and spouses. Marilyn recently attended her 60th high school reunion and a surprise birthday party for Dick’s 80th.
Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, William and Mary Pollock; and grandchild Rory R. Weitzel that passed away in 1996.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband of 60 years R.H. “Dick” Weitzel; children, Steven W. (Laura), David H. (Candice), Susan M. Davis (Derek), and Richard L. (Sylvia); 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
