Mark William Mullbock of Portland, Oregon passed away on February 9, 2019, at the age of 71. He was born in Portland on October 15,1947 and graduated from David Douglas High School in 1965. He graduated from Portland State University in 1969 with a bachelors degree in Linguistics and Romance Languages with a concentration in Portuguese. This included a term abroad in Portugal. Mark was a Fulbright Scholar in Laos from 1972-1974. He received a Masters Degree in Education from Temple University, Japan Campus in 1988.
After college Mark embarked on his life-long journey of travel combining his love of other cultures and language with his career as an educator. Some of the many places he lived and worked were Brazil, Portugal, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Laos and Japan, his home for 40 years before he moved back to Portland last year.
Mark and Sumiko Ishikawa were married on May 6, 1989. They were together for 12 years when Sumiko passed away from cancer. Sumiko was the love of his life. He was very devoted to his mother-in-law, Kimiko Ishikawa, and was her primary caregiver in her later years until her passing in 2015.
Mark was very passionate about his career as a teacher of English as a Second Language and Intercultural Communications. In Japan he worked for NEC Cooperation and later at Showa Women’s University.
Mark is survived by his sister, Marta Thrasher and brother, Hal Mullbock three nephews, Jeff and Ryan Thrasher and David Mullbock and niece Jamie Webb, brother-in-law Ken Thrasher and sister-in-law Beverly Mullbock, four great-nephews and one great-niece.
