Mary Elizabeth Funk Long

She was born at home in Windsor Missouri on January 22, 1927 to Oliver H. Funk and P. Estelle (Mitchell) Funk. The family farmed near Windsor, later living in Sedalia. In 1942 the Funks moved to Vancouver WA where Mary graduated from Fort Vancouver High School. She trained as an RN in the Emmanuel Hospital nursing program, Portland, OR. After graduation she worked at the Veterans Hospital in Vancouver. In her forties she earned a BS RN degree from Linfield College. She ended her long nursing career as an Emergency Room Nurse at Emmanuel.

Mary and her husband of 56 years, Thomas Long, Jr, raised three children. The family lived in the Parkrose area for many years. Mary loved fuchsias. She was a prize winning member of the Oregon Fuchsia Society. She was often happiest in her “Farmer” clothes outside grooming her many fuchsia baskets and pulling weeds. While working on her degree from Linfield she traveled to Europe for a 21 day student tour. She and Tom traveled frequently. They made a ferry trip to Alaska, returning home via the Alcan Highway by motorhome. They enjoyed visiting friends in California, Arizona and their Grandson in South Carolina. She was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles and liked reading cowboy novels. Her favorite thing was spending time with her family and friends.

Mary was predeceased in 2005 by her husband Tom. She is survived by her children, daughter Georgia, sons Tim and Dean (Linda), her grandchildren Chris Harker (Rosemary), Allison Ven Eman , Andy and Patrick (Dani) Long, and her great grandchildren, Frank and Patrick Harker and Logan Long. She is survived as well by her brothers Oliver and Frank Funk, by 5 nephews, 2 nieces, cousins, their families and by many dear friends.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to your local Food Bank in her name.

A memorial service for Mary will be held at Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, Portland, Oregon on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2pm. A reception is planned at the Chapel following the memorial.
