Mary A. Schweitzer has joined her husband, Ken, at their lake cabin in heaven. She left on her journey May 14, 2014, following a brief illness. Mary was born in Miles City, Mont. Aug. 5, 1930, to Tom and Irene Corbett. Older siblings, Irene, Ann, and Joe, welcomed Mary and they were later joined by sister, Margy. Growing up, Mary enjoyed reading, school and music, and was valedictorian of her grade school class at St. Patrick's in Tacoma. She was a manager at Western Union and attended the University of Washington. She married Ken Schweitzer on Sept. 3, 1949. Upon relocating to Portland, Mary devoted herself to raising their four children and volunteering her time at Madeleine School in the early years. She returned to the workforce as a secretary at Grant High School, followed by several assignments at the Portland Public School administrative offices. One of Mary's favorite activities of all was packing up each summer and moving the family to the vacation home in Washington. She enjoyed hiking, boating, skiing and tirelessly gave her family summers filled with lifelong memories. Mary is survived by her children, Steve (Sue), Diane Barton (Rich), Kay Underhill (John) and Mark (Judy); grandchildren, Brad Barton (Cassandra), Shannon Evans (Ryan), Kelly Barton, Carly and Brent Underhill, Adam Schweitzer, Robin and Alison Schweitzer, sisters; Ann O'Brien and Margy Inglima (Bob); and sister-in-law, Betty Corbett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Schweitzer; brother, Joe Corbett; and sister, Irene Bird. We would like to thank Providence St. Vincent caregivers and support teams along with the CICU team for providing care that brought dignity, compassion and comfort during her final days. A service will be held at 11 a.m. June 14, 2014, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Oswego. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to Catholic Charities or the charity of your choice. Mary was a wonderful wife, mother and friend and she will be greatly missed.
