

Marybeth (Mary Elizabeth) Behrends was born July 1, 1935 in Seattle, Washington to Charles Arthur (Charlie) and Clara Edaburn. Marybeth was the second child born to the couple, and her father died while she was quite young. Marybeth spent her early years in Seattle, Iowa, New York City and then moved to Corvallis, Oregon with her mother and sister. Marybeth graduated from Corvallis High School and then attended and graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. In Corvallis on August 20th 1955 Marybeth wed Kenneth Behrends, who preceeded her in death in 1985. They lived in Washington State, Los Angeles, and settled in Portland in 1962. Marybeth enjoyed music and was a gifted pianist and singer. She spent many years as a full-time housewife, but returned to work in the 1970’s. She retired from working in the Portland office of the Salvation Army in the 1990’s. She is survived by three children: Brian, of Sandy, Oregon; Janice Robinson, of Scappoose, Oregon and Kathy, of Vancouver, Washington. Marybeth has four grandchildren: Danielle Behrends, of Corvallis; Austin Behrends, of Sandy; Bernie Chartier, of Cougar, Washington; Jennifer Robinson of Arcata, California, and one great-granddaughter, Hayden Chartier, of Cougar, Washington. Marybeth is also survived by her sister, Bonnie Jewell of Gresham and two nieces and a nephew. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Marybeth’s longtime caregiver, Maria Coldea. In lieu of flowers the family requests remembrances be sent to Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1740 SE 139th Avenue, Portland, Oregon where Marybeth enjoyed the spiritual support, community and fellowships within the congregation.
A memorial service is planned for 3 pm on Wednesday, August 24th at Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1740 SE 139th Avenue, Portland, Oregon. A reception will follow.
