Maura Campos Sagulo – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother – died peacefully in her sleep on May 20, 2021 at her daughter’s Tigard home where she lived her last 13 years. She was born in Caaringayan, Manaoag, Pangasinan, Philippines on April 1, 1925.
Maura was a pastor’s wife. A favorite family story is that when she received a marriage proposal, she would say yes, only if he would pursue formal training in ministry. Thus, she became a dedicated teammate with her husband Simeon in building churches across the Philippines. Whether in the villages, cities, or mountain regions, her life focused on sharing the good news of Jesus, loving and caring for people wherever she lived. Maura was a loving mother of six children, but many others called her “nanang” or “nanay” (“mom” in Tagalog) and later “Lola” (grandma in Tagalog).
Maura’s love for others enlarged her family beyond borders. Together with Simeon and their children, she moved 20 times to plant and pastor churches in the Philippines. She later immigrated to the United States in 1980 and eventually became a U.S. citizen. No matter where she lived, her home was a haven to those who entered, her table ready to serve the fruit of her labor. Maura had a gift of remembering loved ones by name in her prayers and in her stories. She lived a full life of deep joy and contentment, shown in her creativity, energy, and generosity. Ten grandchildren towered over her small frame, but she stood as a giant example of faith in their eyes. Lola Maura also adored each one of her growing twelve great-grandchildren; their hugs, their singing, and their play brightened her days.
Maura was preceded in death by her husband, Simeon, daughter-in-law Paz, and her daughter Virginia. At the age of 96, she was the last to depart this earthly kingdom of her nine brothers and sisters.
Maura is survived by her three daughters, two sons and their spouses: Jem and John Winquist, Willie and Julie Sagulo, Philip Sagulo, Rachel and Jerry Acupan and Nellie and Mark Jones. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew her love.
A celebration of life for Maura Campos Sagulo will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Nexus Church of the Nazarene: 12555 SW 22nd St. Beaverton, OR 97005. Funeral arrangements will be made by Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary & Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
