Nevin Family,
As my mom said the trips to Portland were always something we looked forward to. Mac and Marge were so much like family to us that I always referred to them as my aunt and uncle growing up.  It has been many years since I had the pleasure of visiting with them , but will always remember the times we shared.

Nevin Family,
My walk down memory lane would have to begin here in Owatonna where I enjoyed the friendship of your folks.  Your mother had a sense of humor and when our first baby was slow to arrive she said, "Drive over the railroad tracks." Then as a new mother she helped me with the baby's care as we three were guests in your parents' home. Your mother is like a sister to me.  Then as our family grew to 5 children the anticipation of trips to Portland became an important part of their childhood.  I have a vivid picture of our kids holding hands with all of you as they walked out into the ocean - you helped them be brave.  The beach was always fun for us. Also the rose garden and Multnomah Falls. Mac and Marge's generosity and hospitality will not be forgotten.  
I remember sitting with your mother in the kitchen at the breakfast table and having such good visits.  Just being together with Mac and Marge was so special.  I thank the Lord for the privilege of your family's friendship.

I was born in 1947 and right from my early childhood I was regaled with stories about the wonderful 'Mac Nevin' who used to visit my parents (Nan and Gren Banks) in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. At that time Mac was a Quarter Master Officer and would regularly bring them extra groceries such as powdered eggs and Danish bacon, which were strictly rationed during the war.

The stories ranged from his prowess on the badminton court to his ability to recount his many adventures. By far and away my favourite story as a child was that of Mac spreading marmalade over his bacon and eggs. When asked "Why?"Â he replied, "Why not- it all mixes in your stomach afterwards!"

Mac was held in the very highest esteem by my late parents and although it was not until 1997 that I finally met him, I was able to understand why.

It was really special when he and Sheryl visited Sandra and I in Hull in 2002. We will never forget that visit or the very special 'Mac Nevin'.

Hello to Larry,Jerry,Sheryl and Danny,  You have my sympathy...I know you probably don't remember me but I was all of you childrens baby sitter in Owatonna.  I have such wonderful memories of all you darlings.  Of course I couldn't have worked for a better family than the Nevin's.  I was fortunate to be able to visist with your folks a few years ago and also when they came to Owatonna we always got together.  I know he will be missed.   Sharan Hissam Standke

I have a very fond memory of M n' M.  In the springtime, when the weather warms up and the days get longer, my children love to play outside in front of our house on NE 23rd Street.  We often had the pleasure of meeting Mac and Marge as they walked around the block, enjoying each other and the spring blossoms.  They always stopped to chat and commented about how much my family reminded them of their own children and especially how my son, J.J., made them think of their own three boys as youngsters.  I asked J.J., who was around 4 years old at the time, if he would like to join M n' M on their afternoon walks.  The image of him walking down the block, hand in hand with each of them, "talking about the flowers", is a memory I will always cherish.  Mac was a very special man.

One day, shortly after we moved in across the street from Mac and Marge on Thompson St., our daughter, Rachel (who was three at the time) decided to throw a tantrum.  Unfortunately this was while I was trying to get Matt (who was six at the time) to school.  After trying nearly everything to get her to calm down, I finally said, "If you are not calmed down by the time we have to leave for school, I'm taking you to Mac & Marge's while I take Matt to school!"  Of course, I figured this was the ultimate threat to a three year old - being left with "the old people".  Rachel got a bit quieter, and I was thinking, "What am I doing? I never checked with Mac & Marge, but they are so nice, I'm sure they would play along."  Of course, there they were, sitting in the window having breakfast.  I finally got Matt and Rachel outside, and it seemed that the threat had worked.  Rachel was almost in the car when she melted down again!  I said, "What now?"  She wailed, "I WANTED TO GO TO MAC & MARGE'S HOUSE!"  Well, now I could not take her over there, because it would have been a treat!  She adored Mac and Marge from the moment she met them, as we all did.  We will miss Mac.

Memories of Dad:
A lot of my favorite memories of Dad happen to involve the beach.  I don't know if I loved the beach and ocean first so these memories were so strongly imprinted in my mind or if family trips to the Oregon & Washington coast and some special trips with Dad alone are what formed my lifelong fascination with the beach.
One great time we had together was digging for agates at the Newport Jetty. I was probably about 12 or so and Dad took me to hunt and dig agates from the sand piles and pits that bulldozers had made on the North Jetty. I believe the channel into the bay had been dredged and all the spoils were being dumped on the sand beach and then spread with dozers. It was a time to find large agates that were scarce on the beaches.  We dug into the sides of large piles of sand and found some beauties. We must have spent hours just digging and trying to wash off sand to figure out what rocks were agates or jasper and what was just another rock.  Dad had a rock polisher at home and over the years has added to his collection with all types of rocks but I still really enjoy looking for agates even now.
Another trip to the beach I was probably about the same age, 12-15.  I'm pretty sure I remember Dad taking me out of school for the day and we headed to the beach to dig for razor clams. Anytime you can skip school and have a parent's permission slip to go have fun was of course a big memory. To dig for razor clams you need a low minus tide when the clam-beds are uncovered and you can find where to dig.  The very low tides are pretty rare and in the spring or summer always seem to happen at 5 or 6 o'clock in the morning. So to drive from Portland to Seaside and get there ahead of the low tide and start looking for clam holes definitely meant getting up way too early!  That is a pretty special memory that Dad made for me, that he would be willing to fit a trip like that into his work schedule or even on a Saturday.  Dad could really dig fast and had a short handle clam shovel he used all the time.  He dug about 3-4 big scoops of sand and then rammed his arm clear down into the hole, sometimes up to his shoulder, to try to grab the clam before it could dig down out of reach.  He got really, really good at the fast dig and grab!

Dear Nevin family,
  My heart goes out to each of you, especially Marge as I lost my beloved husband of 41 yrs last month. My prayers

Hello Nevin Family.  Uncle Mac & Aunt Marge are family to our family.  They were thoughtful, considerate, hospitable, generous, and loving to our Fritzler family in my younger years and with my own Jackson family.  My condolences to Aunt Marge and the whole Nevin Clan.  Uncle Man loved the Lord and is with him today.  Thank you Lord for Mac Nevin.  Love Julie (Fritzler) and Ron "RJ" Jackson along with Boston and Brock.

I've long admired Mac and Marge for their generosity and active support of the Holladay Park church. They were usually among the first to welcome visitors and newcomers, often extending the hospitality of their home to others. Uncle Mac, may you rest in peace.  Thank you for the love that you gave me and for the beautiful family that you and Aunt Margie produced.  The love I have received from you and this family is some of the greatest love I've known in my life.  A beautiful Christ based love, that has helped me throughout my life. And my heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the family.  My prayers go to you Uncle Mac in Heaven and thank you for whom all you served.  I shall always remember you as a great man.

Mac was father and grandfather and greatfather in every essence of the word.  He was sensitive and adored Marge up to his last moments on this earth.  May he be at peace and be so proud of the family he created.
He will be greatly missed but will live on in others.

I send my deepest sympathy to Larry and all of his family.  Larry, I knew you in the late 1960's and have thought of you so very often over the years, wondering where you were.
Would love to connect when, or if, the time is ever right. Again, my sorrow for your loss.

We have had the privilege of knowing Mac for more than 50 years.  What a wonderful man he was. While in college Lois and I thought of Mac and Marge as our second family as we spent many enjoyable evenings playing games at their home, and caring for their children when they would go away on business and personal trips out of town.   Mac had a gentle humble spirit and a heart of service, along with his deep love for the Lord.  Mac was the only home and car insurance man that I ever completely trusted, knowing that he would never do us wrong.  We are so sorry we will not be able to attend his memorial service.  Love and prayers to all the Nevin family.

You were like my grandpa.

I was surprised and deeply saddened by the news on the passing of Mac. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you, Marge and family. Mac did so much to see that he and Marge were able to come back to MN so many times after leaving the state to visit with friends.  He and Marge are like family I am so glad that mom(Yvonne Walsh) had such a good friend in Marge to have known Mac as well.  Thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. It was always great to see Mac and Marge when they would come back to Minnesota to visit Our Mother Yvonne Walsh and we would go out to eat with them. Always a great time. You have great parents.
