Our beloved father, Meger E. Dinihanian Jr., 88, a lifelong resident of Portland, passed away peacefully at his home with his children by his side on the evening of August 6, 2014. He was born on July 10, 1926 in Portland, Or. He was the son of Novart and Meger E. Dinihanian Sr. of Armenian descent, grew up in the Mt. Scott neighborhood, and attended Franklin High School. Meger worked with his father and brothers at M.E. Dinihanian & Sons, Oriental Rugs and Carpets, established in 1914, for almost 50 years. He served in the US Army and was in the Boy Scouts, Troop #104, and for years would meet with scout alumni for annual reunion lunches. He was active in the Portland Rotary for 50 years, serving as Sergeant of Arms, and enjoyed bowling for a number of years, playing poker and golf with his buddies, and even managed to get a hole-in-one. His putting was incredibly accurate. Meger was also a long serving member of Al Kader Shriners and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. Meger even found time to swim a mile every morning before work. One of his favorite hobbies was baking bread. In 1948, he married Flora Hairabedian, the true love of his life, in Fresno, Calif. They were married 55 years when she passed away in 2005. They had two children, Janet and Harry. Meger and Flora started their family on SE Knight St. in Portland where Meger built his first house. They moved to the westside in 1958, where he built his second house. Meger built his third house, a vacation home at Cannon Beach, hosting many friends and family. Meger and Flora enjoyed traveling to many countries, cruises and going to Cannon Beach. They also enjoyed looking for antiques. We will miss his wonderful smile and laughter.
Survivors include his daughter and husband, Janet and Don Vachal, and son and wife Harry and Alena Dinihanian. Grandchildren are Devin Dinihanian (Carrie), Nathan Dinihanian (Molly), Adam Dinihanian and Ashley Vachal. Great grandchildren are Abigale and Finnian. The family thanks the staff at Providence Hospice for their wonderful care toward Meger. The family would also like to thank from the bottom of their hearts the amazing caregivers who took exceptional care of Meger for the last three years. Thank you to Andrea, Brigitte, Keborah, Laura, Melanie, Melissa, Valerie, and Elaine. Also, a special thanks to Becky Helzer for her years of support to Meger and Flora over the last thirty years.
