Michael Sorlie, a.k.a. Pockets Traveler, 46, passed away Friday, June 19, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. He was born a twin alongside Shay on January 9, 1980, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to parents Kip and Marilyn. Michael was very caring and helped many people in need. He loved traveling around the country in unconventional ways: by freight train, in homemade Subaru convertibles, and on a turtle bus while traveling with the Rainbow people. He traveled the contiguous 48 states, including Alaska and the western provinces of Canada. He dreamed of sailing down the Mississippi from Lake Itaska to the Gulf of Mexico and to the ends of the earth. Now, he sails. His spiritual life was unconventional but deeply rooted in his love for nature, animals, woods, and mountains. He dedicated his heart to Lord Ganesh, the Hindu God of beginnings, wisdom, and success. And now Michael begins his voyage west after sharing his love with friends, family, and beloved animals. We will cherish his wisdom of the earth, of journey, of Monster drinks, and smokes. We love you.
Michael is survived by his mother, Marilyn; his father, Kip; siblings, Chuck Premer (Michelle Premer), Keith Sorlie, Shay Sorlie (Stephen Palo), Tait Sorlie (Bee Sorlie); his nieces and nephews, Hannah Sorlie-Palo (Tanin Cook), A.J. Sorlie, Lily Palo, Julian Palo, Kayden Sorlie, Landre Sorlie, Ziahna Sorlie, Alaya Sorlie, Kaia Sorlie; his aunt Cindy McElroy, uncle Bob VanAken, uncle Bruce VanAken (Debra VanAken); Cookie the Cat and Hyva Poika, and so many met along the road.
Michael was special to all of us. He was kind, caring, and so very creative in his own unique way. He was a dreamer, artist, and handyman who created beautiful pieces of art that he gifted to friends and family. He had a heart of gold. We will miss him so much and pray for his mercy and grace in the realm on the other side. We will see you again one day in joy, honor, and peace, our precious son, our cherished brother, our loving uncle and darling nephew.
