It is with profound sadness that the family of Michael James Unruh announces his passing on May 10, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. Mike was born on February 18, 1971, to Maren Hughes and Jimmie Unruh, and throughout his life he brought warmth, laughter, compassion, and unwavering love to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Mike graduated from David Douglas High School, where he was active in water polo and swim teams. He continued his education at Iona University in New York and Walla Walla University in Washington, earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing, before completing his Master of Science in Nursing at University of South Alabama.
Caring for others was not simply Mike’s profession — it was who he was. He spent 18 years as a critical care RN, offering calm reassurance and extraordinary compassion to patients and families during their hardest moments. At the time of his passing, he worked for the Oregon Poison Center. It was while working in critical care at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center that he met his beloved partner, Amy, beginning a relationship built on love, laughter, and deep friendship.
Mike lived with a quick wit and an incredible sense of humor that could light up any room. His infectious laugh, calm demeanor, and unconditional kindness made people feel instantly at ease. He loved nature photography, golfing, playing games and cards, and sharing his enthusiasm for Pokémon. More than anything, Mike loved his family and friends fiercely. Even through difficult times, he could still find humor and help others smile. That gift — his ability to bring comfort, laughter, and light — will never be forgotten.
His family is heartbroken by this loss and will miss him beyond words.
Mike is survived by his children, Ethan, Christian, and Katie; his partner, Amy, and her son, Grant; along with many loving family members, dear friends, and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute through the OHSU Foundation.
A memorial service will be held on May 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Skyline Memorial Gardens, with a reception to follow.
