He had five siblings; 4 older brothers, and two younger sisters. He moved to Oakland, CA at the age of 16 years old. He was raised by his uncle in Oakland. They both relocated to Portland, OR in 1954.
He lived with his uncle for about 10 years, and even after he remained close to his Aunt Tuey Char Kwong Yee and her son Mark. As a child he enjoyed spending time outdoors; swimming, fishing, and bird watching. He attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in Oakland, CA.
He met his future wife, Ngan Tin (Chan) Yee, from Hoi Yin ,Canton , China on a blind date set up by their friends. They went sightseeing in Hong Kong and went to a movie. They were married November 27, 1961 in Hong Kong. 200 guests attended the traditional Chinese wedding and banquet.
He had two children.
John On and Janny.
His vacations included trips to Oakland & San Francisco, CA and Vancouver BC, Canada.
He had three granddaughters.

His uncle encouraged him to learn a trade and pursue a career as a chef.
He worked at the Pagoda Restaurant for over a decade before retiring in 1999.
The kitchen was his domain, he enjoyed cooking and preparing dishes for the family. Some of his favorites homemade recipes include razor clams, clam chowder, fish and Chinese roast pork. He also enjoyed gardening, he grafted many Asian pear trees.
He enjoyed reading Chinese newpapers and watching sports including, football, basketball and baseball. The Chicago Bulls were his favorite team.
He passed away on May 15th, 2011 at Portland Adventist Hospital in Portland, OR. The cause of death was heart failure.
Michael is survived by his wife and children.
He was laid to rest at Lincoln Memorial Park.
