Millie (as her family and friends knew her) was born Mildred Marie Alsleben on a farm in Glencoe Minnesota July 21, 1916. Her mother Fannie (nee Dascher) died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Millie and her older sister, Evelyn lived with relatives until her father, Albert Alsleben remarried. The children then joined hime and his bride, Emma Stresemann. The issue of that marriage was Millie's two half brothers, Maynard and Ellsworth, whom she dearly loved and are both now deceased as is her sister Evelyn.
Millie describes a happy childhood with hard working but doting parents. German was spoken at home and Millie remained fluent in that language her entire life. She had a remarkable memory for poems and songs she had memorized in English and German as a child. Until shortly before her death she could recite and sing them all.
Millie was married twice; first to William Parent from 1940 until his death in 1960 and then to Reuben Jowsey in 1962 from whom she separarted from in 1973. By then she and Reuben were living in Portland Oregon and Millie stayed here until her death. She managed apartment homes for 25 years prior to her retirement in 1987.
Millie suffered some severe losses throughout her life. In spite of that she invariably described life as good. She related many happy events during her childhood including her love of music, dancing, poetry and song. Her sunny personality and good nature drew many friends to her.
Millie lived independantly until the age of 94. In July of 2010 she announced it was time to move to Emily's Foster Care, a facility owner with which she was well acquainted. It was there she died on October 15, 2014 with her beloved caretaker and friend, Emily Ardelean by her side.A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 24, 2014 at Lincoln Memorial Park, 11801 SE Mt.
