Obituary of Nancy Joan Salmon
IN THE CARE OF

Lincoln Memorial Park & Funeral Home

Nancy Joan Withers was born in Washington DC on July 28, 1936, to Charles and Florence. The family moved to Seattle in 1938 where her brother John joined the family. While growing up in Seattle, Nancy made lifelong friends with Barbara and Beverly, with whom she shared many milestones, including attending each other's weddings and 50th anniversaries. In 1949, the family moved to Tacoma, where her sister Kathy rounded out the family in 1952. Nancy spent many summer vacations with extended family in Portland, creating fond memories of adventures with her grandparents and Aunt Doris.

Nancy graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma and went on to attend the University of Puget Sound. During a visit to Portland in 1955, she met Michael G. Salmon, and they married in Portland on September 21, 1957. Together, they had four children: son Steve, followed by daughters, Suzy, Sherry, and Sandy.

While raising her children, Nancy was an active volunteer, tutoring students and volunteering with the Multnomah County Elections Division as a local precinct chair, which was hosted in the family home. She enjoyed providing this civic service and loved catching up with the neighbors as they came to vote.

In 1980, Nancy began working at the Portland Police Sunshine Division, where her husband served as Commander. She cherished her time there, building lasting relationships, and continued working part-time after Mike's retirement.

Nancy had a passion for travel, going on several cruises and visiting destinations like Hawaii and Europe, with special fondness for England, Scotland, Ireland, and Slovenia. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, genealogy, scrapbooking, and journaling, expressing her creative flair in many ways.

As a grandmother, Nancy was always available to help, encourage, teach, and share in the antics of her grandchildren. She was a constant source of love and support.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Mike and granddaughter Azure. She is survived by son Steve (Melanie), daughters Suzy (Mike), Sherry, and Sandy, grandchildren Terra (Jeff), Hallie (Annie), Emma, Veronica (Jacob), Alexander, and Rowan, great granddaughters lona and Maud, brother John (Carol), sister Kathy (Tim), aunt Doris, nephew Cameron, and best friend Annette Hunt.

Nancy spent her last years at Courtyard at Mt Tabor, and the family is deeply grateful to the caring staff who lovingly looked after her, as well as to Kaiser Hospice for their support during her final months.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
