Nick was born on March 9, 1943, in Toole, Utah, to Helen and Peter Constantine Douvris. At the age of nine, he and his family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he would live the rest of his life and raise a family. Nick attended Sabin Elementary and Grant High School.
In 1965, at 22 years old, Nick met the love of his life, Carolyn Jo Raycraft, after nearly crashing his car into hers as they drove on NE Sandy Boulevard. They exchanged contact details, and two days later he made a surprise appearance at her work. They married a year later, on August 13, 1966. They bought the family home in SE Portland Colonial Heights neighborhood, where they lived for over 30 years. In the spring of 1970, Nick and Carolyn had their first child, daughter Tresa, and son Nicholas II in 1974. Nick was a proud, hardworking father deeply committed to providing for his family.
Nick worked as a quality control analyst at Union Carbide Corporation’s Mining and Metals plant in Portland until its closure. In 1974 he joined the Oregon Air National Guard as an air traffic controller in the 116th Tactical Air Control Squadron at Camp Rilea in Warrenton, Oregon. Nick completed many missions and active-duty deployments both domestically and internationally and proudly became First Sergeant in 2000. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Nick was activated in support of Operation Noble Eagle/Enduring Freedom until his retirement in 2003.
Nick also owned and operated his own carpentry and handyman business until 1994 when he then worked for the State of Oregon as a union carpenter and AFSCME local 3932 President until his retirement in 2012.
Nick’s outgoing personality, sense of humor and leadership qualities earned him respect and admiration throughout his life. He was an avid coin and stamp collector and an exceptionally skilled, self-taught finish carpenter, revered for the magnificent shadowboxes he created for his fellow Air National Guard retirees.
Nick is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Tresa; son, Nicholas II; grandson, Jackson; his sister Geneve and her husband Mark. He was predeceased by his mother, father, and brother, Constantine “Gus” Douvris.
A celebration of Nick’s life, with military honors, will be held on his 82nd birthday, Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM, Lincoln Memorial Park & Funeral Home, located at 11801 SE Mt.
