Peter Colin Moore "Pop Dukes," loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully Friday, April 29th at age 78. While he left us all far too soon, it is hard to imagine a life more well-lived.
Peter was born in Cleveland, Ohio Feb. 21, 1944, the youngest child of Naval officer Raymond John Moore and Mary Moore, brother to Mike Moore and Mary-lin Ryan. A typical Navy family, they spent time in several ports of call before settling down in San Diego. It was here that he would make many of his lifelong friends and meet his wife Christina. During his childhood, Peter developed his love of sports, playing basketball, baseball and golf, which would become a life long passion. While at San Diego State University on a golf scholarship, he discovered his talent for design.
At the suggestion of several professors at SDSU, Peter decided to develop his talent for design at the Chouinard Art Institute, graduating in 1968 and beginning his career working for his mentor, Robert Overby. By 1972 Peter had moved his young family to Portland, Ore., to become the Creative Director for Georgia Pacific. Eventually heading out on his own to create Peter Moore Graphic Design, where he first encountered Nike as a client, and would meet his friend and future business partner Rob Strasser. He would go on to become Global Creative Director at Nike for about 4 years before leaving with Rob to create Sports Incorporated in 1987. It is here he would first encounter adidas as a client, and begin a relationship with the brand he maintained the rest of his life. He left adidas in 1998 and opened his own design studio Whatayathink Inc., where he could create his art and would still consult regularly with adidas and a number of start-ups right up until his death.
A true legend and icon in the industry, it is impossible to overstate Peter's impact on the sporting goods industry and the world of design. Winning multiple awards and honors for his early graphic design work and throughout his nearly 60-year career. He was the architect behind the Jordan Brand, designing the Air Jordan 1, the Air Jordan Wings and Jumpman logos. He and his partner Rob Strasser launched the adidas Equipment range with the new Performance logo, re-igniting the adidas brand and further cementing his impact on the sports world and sneaker culture. Peter adhered to two simple principles in all of his design work, "Form follows function" and "the solution to the problem is inherent in the problem itself."
Peter was a lifelong creator and artist. While his creative work in the sporting goods industry is widely known, his artwork was much more personal. He truly believed in the power of art to change hearts and minds, or at least start the conversation and to lend a new perspective to current events. His annual Christmas prints calling for Peace were just one example of how he hoped to make the world a better place through his art.
Peter was passionate about his work, his art, golf, and most of all his family. He was a very private and reluctant public figure, keeping work separate from his personal life, but he was incredibly generous with his time and loved teaching, inspiring and collaborating other creators. Since his passing, hundreds of people have reached out to share the impact he had on them, which the family greatly appreciates. While he would cringe at all the accolades, he would be thrilled to know just how many people he impacted over his lifetime.
Peter is survived by his wife, Christina; his three sons, Devin (Janna), Dylan (Tracy), and Hagen (Morgan); his grandchildren, Emalee, Kaitlin, Lilli, Matilda, and Jaden; brother, Mike Moore; sister, Mary-lin Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
