As the eldest of five children, Phyllis learned early the values of responsibility, gratitude, and care for others—qualities that shaped every part of her life. She grew up in Pasadena, California, where her father served as a Nazarene minister. From a young age, Phyllis had an eye for beauty and fashion; as a teenager, she worked at the local department store and dairy to buy her own school clothes—something that filled her with pride and independence.
Phyllis began her college studies at Northwest Nazarene College in Idaho and later attended Pasadena College in California, where she worked in the library. Her lifelong love of reading and learning began there and never waned. During college, she met the love of her life, Woody Beukelman, and their connection was enduring. They were married on March 8, 1952, in Glendale, Arizona, while Woody was stationed at Camp Roberts. The two built a life grounded in faith, family, and deep devotion to one another—celebrating 73 years of marriage before Woody’s passing this past July.
Phyllis cherished her role as a homemaker and mother. She poured her heart into her family and community, volunteering in her children’s classrooms and serving as a Camp Fire leader. Together, she and Woody led the teen program at Beaverton Nazarene Church for many years, loving those young people as if they were their own.
Her faith was the steady heartbeat of her life. Phyllis had a deep love for Scripture, prayer, and spiritual growth. She served as head of Women’s Ministries at her church and later, after moving to the Claremont Golf community, she founded and led a women’s Bible study that flourished for nearly 25 years. Her thoughtful leadership and gentle wisdom shaped countless lives.
Above all, Phyllis delighted in being a mom and “Oma.” Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she built treasured family traditions that will live on for generations. She had a remarkable gift for connection—curious about others, sincerely interested in their stories, and always quick to offer warmth, encouragement, and love.
Phyllis will be remembered for her gracious spirit, her steadfast faith, and her unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She is survived by her three children, Elwood, Ed (Donna), and Brenda (Todd); seven grandchildren, Jarod, Audrey, Page, Marshall, Blake, Jake, and Paxton; and two great-grandchildren, Fiona and Aria.
Her life was a reflection of love—steadfast, and beautifully faithful.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Parc
