

Phyllis Huie passed away on August 9, 2023 peacefully with family by her side. Phyllis was born on July 20, 1927 in Sarles, North Dakota, the daughter of James and Ruth Martin. She grew up in St. John, North Dakota and then attended high school in Cando, North Dakota. During her life, she would recall many visits to the Turtle Mountains where her grandparents had a homestead. Her grandmother would teach the grandchildren sewing skills to keep them occupied.
When she was 18 she moved to Portland, Oregon. She quickly obtained a job with the Standard Oil Company where she worked for 16 years until the company moved to Seattle. Phyllis then worked for an attorney firm. She met her husband, Edwin C. Huie, in 1948 and married in 1950. In 1962 her daughter, Barbara, was born. In 1964 she opened up the first women’s apparel sample shop called Phyl’s Wear-A’Bouts, which was located in the Montavilla shopping area. She sold the store 5 years later to stay at home with her daughter. As her daughter grew older, Phyllis became very involved in PTA becoming President of Mt. Tabor PTA, then part of the Parent Club of Washington-Monroe High School, afterwards becoming Portland Council President, then Oregon State PTA Treasurer. She also volunteered for a few years at the Albertina Kerr Center.
When her grandsons were born she naturally became an adoring and loving grandmother. She and her husband Ed, loved going on trips to Seattle, Disneyland, Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico. She enjoyed volunteering to help children, working in her garden, watching horror movies and spending time with her friends & family and especially with her grandsons.
She is preceded by her husband, Edwin Clarence Huie of Portland OR, her brother James Martin of Crescent City, CA her brother E.D. “Bud” Martin of North Dakota, her sister Barbara Baumgartner of Cut Bank, Montana then Seattle, WA. She is survived by her daughter, her two grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States and Canada.
Phyllis will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland, at 1:45 pm on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Please arrive at the cemetery no later than 1:30 pm to be led in for the service. Following the committal service, all will then be welcome to gather with the family for a Celebration at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home just across the street from the cemetery, where refreshments and fellowship will be available until 4:30 pm.
