On July 18, 2012, our Heavenly Father called Rebecca (Becky) Jean Schwarz Panko Doherty to her Heavenly Home. She died bravely from liver cancer and with her devoted, loving husband, Martin (Marty) Doherty and daughter Tonya Panko, at her side. She shared her love for Jesus through her “Jesus Calling”Book Ministry.
Becky was born in Portland, Oregon on December 23, 1962 as Betty Jean Grogan. At four years old, she was adopted by George Robert (Bob) and Gloria Alyce Schwarz and named Rebecca Jean. Becky lived in Portland and Springfield Oregon before moving to Clatskanie, Oregon after her marriage to Marty Doherty.
Marty Doherty and Rebecca Jean Panko were married on July 29, 2000 in Clatskanie, Oregon.
While living in Springfield, OR, she was in the U. S. Army Reserves for seven years. From December 1990 to March 1991 as Specialist Private Class (SPC), she served her active duty in Desert Storm during the Gulf War with the Combat Medic Unit. Becky loved to serve people, had a love for the medical field, and was a very courageous Army Soldier. She was very happy and proud of her military service; Becky’s service with the U. S. Army Reserves was a memorable experience.
She is survived by her husband Marty Doherty of Clatskanie, Oregon, son Michael Panko, daughter Tonya Panko of Springfield Oregon and five grandchildren. She was a caring, loving mother and grandmother. She was overly fond of animals and especially her special dog “Flash”.
Other surviving relatives are: her father, George Robert (Bob) Schwarz and step-mother, Loretta J. Schwarz of West Linn, OR, sister Katherine (Katy) Schwarz, and nephew Daniel Loar of Salem, OR, niece Kristen Loar Burget of Norman, Oklahoma, half-brother, Shawn S. Schwarz of West Linn, OR . stepsisters, Karen Graves Pyrch of West Linn, OR and Sharol Graves of Tijeras, New Mexico, and Aunt Wilma (Billie) Neville of Portland, OR.
Her cousins are Linda Schwarz of Langley, WA, David Schwarz of Seattle, WA area and Sally Beahan of Bothell, WA.; Sheryl Siler of Lewiston, ID and Ronald Neville of Redmond, OR. Her loving and devoted mother Alyce Schwarz preceded her in death.
Burial arrangements are being made through Lincoln Memorial Park Funeral Home. The current information we have is that it will be a 30- minute military burial will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Schmidt of New Hope Community Church along with the military personnel at the Willamette National Cemetery. The Cemetery is located on 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086.
The burial will be Wednesday, August 8th at 1:00 PM with a reception following at Bob and Loretta’s home, 1395 Skye Parkway, West Linn, OR 97068, phone 503-699-9549.
