Renee was a sweet person who was liked by everyone. Her main goal in life was to take care of the needs of her family. Renee Jean Bates passed away on July 9, 2013. She was struck by a school bus while walking across a busy S.E. Portland street.

On Halloween weekend, her neighbor's apartment caught on fire and the fire spread to her apartment. She and her husband, and 10 year old son, were forced to live in a hotel for 3 days while they fixed up another place for them to live. She lost all of her belongings in this tragedy and even lost her pet kitty who died from smoke inhalation.

In November, Renee was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour. She remained in critical condition at OHSU for 3 weeks while she recovered from surgery. She was released from the hospital and was home for not even a week when she became infected with spinal meningitis. She spent 4 more weeks in the hospital fighting to rid her body of this deadly infection. As a result, she lost feeling in her right foot and right leg.

Despite everthing that had happened to her; she still managed to keep a positive attitude toward life. Her last doctor's visit showed positive results and things were looking up for her and her family.

When I think about Renee many positive memories come rushing my way. She was a fun-spirited,young woman who prayed to God and who enjoyed life to its fullest. She was extremely talented at singing Karoke songs when she was in her early 20's. Renee also enjoyed swimming in a pool or in a nearby river or lake with friends or family. I know that is what she would prefer to do on a hot summer day like today! A service will be held for her on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 11:30 in the morning at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, which is located at the top of Mt. Scott. The web address is:

The Renee Bates Memorial fund has been established to help with donations that will go towards paying for funeral costs. You can visit any Key Bank branch to make a contribution.

Renee leaves behind her Husband, Shawn D. Bates, and her 10 year old son, Noah Bates. She is the daughter of Jim and Jean Bowling. She has three siblings: brother, Scott Bowling, and sisters,Valerie Spiller and Jill Chilson. She has a sister in-law, Winona Bowling, and a brother- in- law, William Kelly Spiller. She also has three nephews and one niece.

Renee was a very cherished member of our family and she will be deeply missed!

Renee & Shawn Bates. Two people so perfectly in love that God never intended for them to be apart very long. I worked With Renee for 5 years, met her at IHOP & instantly became friends. Her & Shawn took in my daughter & I for 6 months so we could get on our feet. Shawn missed Noah's 1st step so he was always encouraging Kaid to walk & I am glad he was the one to see her take her 1st step. That meant a lot to him he would say. He brought up that memory so often & the smile & happiness in his eyes every time he brought it up I know how grateful he is to have that memory. They were so giving & always willing to help. Some people truly do not deserve what God had planned. Renee alone had so much more in her to give. She could have touched so many more lives. She always gave, never expecting to receive, never complained, she was truly a bright spirit and most of all a fighter! She is the strongest woman I have ever known. To go through every thing she went through with a positive outlook, still be a mother and be the rock of the family. Thank you Renee & Shawn for everything you have ever done for Kaid & I. We only can return our thanks by continuing to be there for Noah. The past 4 months we have learned to love him more & more. I always plan on keeping in contact & as time passes am greatful to have so many pictures & memories to share with him. He truly has a huge, loving heart just like Renee. & we love him. I know that you would do the same & at every moment of every day are watching over him.

I will never forget Renee. I remember her as little peach. I remember from the time she was born she had the cutest smile and was a special gift to us all. Her time was taken from us too soon. Renee will be forever missed.

I went to high school with Renee and we were great freinds. No matter what we were doing we always had fun doing it. Watching scary movies, listening to Depeche Mode, dancing, coloring our hair, playing wall ball or just walking around we always had fun. Renee was a beautiful and caring person who will truly be missed by many.

I only knew Renee as a young girl when she was in grade school with my kids. She was in my Girl Scout troop and a fun girl to be around. Prayers for the family.
